Creating a website isn’t always intuitive. What people wanted six years ago is not what they want now. Gone are the days of crazy websites that had moving backgrounds and tons of silly animation. Today, people prefer a more sophisticated-looking website that allows them to browse on whichever device they choose. Check out the tips below to see if your website is right on target – or if you should spruce it up.

Don’t Forget the Mobile Devices

Some 50% of Internet subscribers are on mobile phones and tablets. That isn’t to say that people don’t have computers and laptops, but life is busy; it’s much easier to browse the Internet on your phone while you’re on the go than it is to bring out your laptop to do the same thing. Because of this, your website should be mobile friendly. Your text should be readable on any screen and you shouldn’t have a ton of pictures and videos that would slow down the loading time of your website. Make sure your call-to-action buttons for email and phone contact are “clickable” so people can take action from their phones immediately.

A Picture Says a Thousand Words

Too many images can kill your loading times, but people still like to see what they’re buying. In fact, most people won’t buy something from a website that does not feature an attractive picture. Use some low-resolution thumbnail pictures on your pages. Make them clickable so someone who isn’t using a mobile device or a smaller screen can click on them to make them larger and easier to see.

Have Some Video Tutorials

You’re a small business, and you should take advantage of that fact. Focus on keeping your customers engaged on a more personal level. Don’t just try to sell to them via traditional print methods; SHOW them how the product they’re interested in works. What benefits does it include? Put someone in your office to the task of designing a few videos for some of your products and use your Analytics to see if people linger on those pages more than they do on other pages. Often, a little extra something such as a video can make all the difference.
